Go Vote

Case Study

Project Overview

A proposed federal voting app for US Citizens that allows citizens to learn about upcoming elections, register to vote, research candidates, and submit their ballot electronically.

Role & Scope

This platform was a team project for my UX/UI certification where I handled aspects research, ideation, design, testing, and prototyping. I was responsible for the home, candidate, precinct, and map user flows.

Research and Definition

Interview Insights

Through our user interviews, we learned that potential voters do not like waiting in line, often don't find time to vote, and are slighlty skeptical of online voting in terms of security.

Competitor Analysis

Due to the federal constraints on voting online, we had to get creative in a competitive analysis.

Estonia uses an all-online voting platform with great success while there is a competitor that offers online voting in the US -- until security issues has sidelined the project.

Ideation

I Like / I Wish / What If

Brainstorming the features to include in an app that potentially every US Citizen with a phone would have access to was a liberating process.

Feature Prioritization Matrix

At the same time, we had to be realistic and refer back to our user research to remain grounded.

Our Solution to Simplify

Registration

Registering to vote is registering for the app.

Election Information

Candidate overviews, election notifications, and polling place information helps inform citizens.

Secure Ballot

Easy to fill out ballots with paper receipts -- and a selfie filter! -- help drive voter turnout and keep our elections secure.

Prototyping and User Testing

User Flow

An ap that allowed citizens to register to vote and submit their ballot requires an extremely clear user flow.

Low-Fi Prototypes

Working in a team, it was important to stay true to our research and flow throughout the prototyping phase.

Usability Testing

GoVote had to check a lot of boxes, which meant thorough, structured usability testing plan to ensure we were leaving no stone unturned.

Avoiding Bias

Let's Get Political

How can we ensure that our app portrays candidates with parity while ensuring the citizens only get the facts? The following design decisions were made with these questions in mind.

Conclusion

The 2020 election showcased that a federal, digital solution to absentee voting would be a great boon to voter turnout and civic engagement.

.

Until legislation is created to make this a reality, GoVote is just a glimpse of what voting and registration in the United States could look like in the digital age.
